In the middle of 2016 it was announced with great fanfare that a Mexican had built an engine that ran on water . The illusion of finally ending dependence on gasoline or diesel immediately arose in the minds of many.
There is countless news around the world about those who claim to have built a vehicle that runs on water, but can you really build a water engine for a car?
Without getting too technical, here we will try to offer an explanation about water motors and if they can really be manufactured.
First things first, who was the Mexican who claims to have built an engine that works only with water? His name is Ricardo Flores and he is a student of Mechatronics Engineering at the Hispanic Campus of the Universidad del Valle de México.
Ricardo pointed out that his invention would help reduce the emissions of pollutants that millions of vehicles produce in Mexico City alone, as well as eliminate dependence on fossil fuels.
In his announcement, the still ninth-grade student assured that he intends to create a kit with which a conventional diesel or gasoline car can be modified to one that runs on water.
How does it work?
The inventor of the water engine explained that the modified engine breaks down the water that enters it through a process called hydrolysis, producing various types of gases, mainly hydrogen.
The engine continues to work through combustion but in this case the fuel is hydrogen, hence why a radical modification of the engine is not necessary.
Ricardo pointed out that he intends to insert his invention in the public transport sector first since the advantages would have a bigger impact.
Can you really build an engine that runs on water?
Once the news is given, we want to explain what is the reality that until now is known about water engines. It should be noted that at no time do we try to distort any invention and less if it is that of a Mexican.
The first thing is to understand how a combustion engine works. In a very simple way I can tell you an engine works in four movements.
- Fuel and air enter the combustion chamber.
- The mixture is compressed.
- The spark plug creates a spark to explode the mixture.
- Combustion debris comes out of the exhaust.
It is in the explosion where the energy is produced that in the end ends up moving the tires of the vehicle, it is in this third point where it is needed, the fuel; leaving out electric cars , of course.
The fuel can be of many types, gasoline, diesel, LP Gas, Natural Gas or hydrogen like the one obtained in a water engine, so it would be more accurate to say that a water engine is actually a hydrogen engine .
Once the point is understood, it remains to explain that water without any other type of substance saves very little energy in its chemistry , even depending on the effectiveness of the engine, it takes more energy to extract hydrogen than is obtained from it.
It is worth clarifying that the energy produced by hydrolysis is very little, it would be another thing to speak of that produced by nuclear fusion, which is millions of times more powerful . However, this technology is still under investigation and application in cars is unsafe.
Extracting energy from water is expensive
To say that a water engine only works with the vital liquid is not totally true because for hydrolysis to occur, other elements are necessary, the most common boron whose price is more expensive than gasoline itself.
It is true that cars with a water engine existed from the very birth of the car, however, the power they produced was sufficient for that time but today the needs are greater. Due to all these factors, it is difficult to speak of a water motor that produces enough energy to move the car in an efficient and profitable way.
