Going on a family vacation can be an exciting adventure! But what should you do with all the food you want to take away? What should you do with all the extra things for which there is no room in the car?
Remember that this trip will last a long time for the children. You need to relax, but how?
Going on vacation gives the family a chance to relax, but for parents it could be even more stressful than everyday life. It is important to know what is the safest and most convenient way to travel this summer.
How to make the roof box
If your car has a roof rack, you can tie a roof box to it. This trunk can create more space inside the car so that your passengers can be more comfortable, or so you can carry more suitcases.
But before you hit the road, there are a number of safety measures to keep in mind. First, read your car’s instruction manual to find out the weight limits for your roof.
The limit will depend on the type of vehicle but typically holds between 75 and 250 pounds. By exceeding the weight limit of your car, you increase the risk of an accident.
Distribute things evenly on each side when you make the trunk. Put the heaviest things on the bottom because things are going to move during the trip.
By adding more weight on top of the car, the center of gravity will be higher. With a higher center of gravity, your car is more likely to flip if you turn sharply. Because of this, you should turn slowly and avoid stopping or accelerating quickly.
Follow all instructions to make sure the trunk is properly installed. Driving with an improperly installed roof box could cause damage to your vehicle and increase the risk that you will injure others, specifically the cars behind you if the top box were to fall.
Finally, be careful when entering garages or driving under bridges. It’s easy to forget about the trunk, so write a note and put it on your dashboard if necessary!
How to transport food
You can save money by preparing takeout food on your trip. However, traveling with food could cause problems, so you need to make a plan.
Try to give yourself extra time if you are bringing cooked food. After cooking, let it cool slightly, then put it in containers with lids, like Tupperware. Containers like these can usually be stacked, making them easier to travel with.
Transport frozen food in a cooler and cook it when you arrive at your destination.
If you don’t have access to a cooler, put any cold food you have in front of an air fan in your car. The air conditioner could serve as a refrigerator to preserve the freshness of the food.
To prevent food from spoiling, you should store cold food below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for up to four hours. If your trip is going to take more than four hours, it may be best to leave perishable food at home.
How to entertain the kids
A study in Australia found that when it comes to distractions, children are 12 times more dangerous to drivers than phones. To reduce distractions for your little ones, try to entertain them. Phones and tablets have apps for kids, but you don’t want them staring at a screen for hours either.
You could bring crayons and notebooks to paint or play games like “I see, I see,” searches for plates or letters of the alphabet, hangman, tic-tac-toe, and so on. You could also create your own game!
